Irvine is where it’s at in fuel-cell world
Orange County Register
Sunday, April 23, 2006

Irvine is something of a center of research and development for the technology. Professor Scott Samuelsen, director of the National Fuel Cell Research Center at UC Irvine, is experimenting on three fuel-cell SUVs through a partnership with Toyota.

Quantum Fuel Systems Technologies Worldwide of Irvine makes hydrogen fueling stations and tanks and has supplied more than 150 hydrogen-based fuel systems and developed programs for automakers such as General Motors, Toyota and Ford.

Two of the state’s hydrogen fueling stations are in Orange County – at UC Irvine and in Santa Ana – and two more are planned for Irvine.

The state says 95 fuel-cell vehicles are currently on the road in California, such as test vehicles being driven by officials at UCI and the cities of Santa Ana and Irvine.
