Taking on Platinum: QuantumSphere’s Nanoparticles Could Dramatically Reduce Catalyst Costs
Fuel Cell Industry Report, September 1
Two of the most expensive elements of proton exchange membrane (PEMFC) and direct methanol fuel cells (DMFC) today are the membrane electrode assembly (MEA) and the bipolar plates that encase the MEA within each individual cell in a stack. MEAs contain the critical catalyst to oxidize hydrogen or methanol or reduce oxygen, which promotes the electrochemical reaction. For most PEMFC and DMFC designs, the catalyst with the best performance properties to date, and unequivocally the highest cost, is the noble metal platinum (Pt).
