| | | | | | Update on Energy Storage - Batteries
With the worldwide primary (disposable) and secondary (rechargeable) battery market approaching $60 billion, there is tremendous pressure to meet the evolving needs of consumers while improving energy efficiency. From computers to megawatt-level grid energy storage, battery power is a crucial element for enabling today's mobile applications and large scale energy harvesting.
Portable Power: Convergence of telecommunications and entertainment in handheld devices has dramatically increased demand for power in ever smaller configurations as users stream media, listen to music, browse the web, take photos, and make phone calls all on the same system. Batteries for these devices must offer increased operating time, with increased power.
Grid Storage: As wind, geothermal, and solar technologies contribute to a greater portion of the world's renewable energy harvesting, the ability to store energy and reduce power intermittency is critical. Additionally, these batteries must be able to operate on the decades time scale with minimal maintenance.
Providing sufficient energy for these applications, with excellent longevity, is a formidable challenge.
